He currently attends a culinary school where he can also earn his high school diploma. His specialty is chicken curry. Influenced by his biological father, he has loved books since childhood, particularly mysteries and sci-fi. His favorite author is Ryunosuke Nagumo. He has a habit of taking a step back to view things objectively from a bird's-eye perspective. He is afraid of water and cannot swim.
A Wakayama dialect word meaning "idiot" or "dummy." Rather than a harsh insult, it's a somewhat softer expression that is often used playfully between close friends.
A sacred treasure of the Hitogashima Shrine. It shares its name with the spear used to create the land in Japanese mythology. According to the shrine's history, it has been passed down for over several millennia, and it is said that the drops from this spear birthed the island of Onogoro. The spearhead is forged from rust-proof meteoric iron, and while intended for ceremonial use, it possesses high lethal force. The handle portion has been remade numerous times over the years; the current one was crafted from oak during the Edo period.
A private vegetable garden located on the way from Restaurant Kofune to Mt. Takanosu. Tended to with a meticulous focus on the soil itself, the fresh vegetables harvested here are one of the secrets to Kofune's flavor.

The observational boundary. It refers to a cliff-like concept that steadily closes in with each loop. It represents the limit of the scope where a do-over is possible on the timeline, creeping up behind Shinpei as time flows forward. The further away this cliff is, the more time he has to try again; the closer it gets, the less leeway he has left. If this cliff catches up to him and he falls, Shinpei's death will be finalized, and from then on, the timeline observed by Haine will become cemented as objective reality.
A present given to him by Ushio in a dream. However, he doesn't know what it is yet.
14 years ago, the shock of eating Ryunosuke caused Haine to panic, and her persona as the human girl Hoine separated from Hiruko's body. The mud comprising the right eye she took then drifted in the sea for years, eventually copying Ushio in a chance encounter. After maturing and awakening as the Observer's right eye, it transcended time to be handed over to Shinpei. It marked the end of everything, and the beginning as well.
July 18th. A beach cleanup drive was held at Omoto Beach, the coastline spreading out in front of Restaurant Kofune. It was an event to collect trash in preparation for a local Hitogashima Island ritual. While participating, Ushio and Mio spotted a young girl standing on the rocks. Her appearance was purportedly a dead ringer for Ushio.
July 24th. The Summer Festival, Hitogashima Island's biggest event, was held. Catching a glimpse of a woman who looked like Ushio, Shinpei left Mio and the others behind and instinctively ran after her. Though he lost sight of her in the crowd, after making his way to Omoto Beach, Shinpei reunited with the Ushio who was supposed to be dead. Unable to recall her own death, nor even the reason why she was there, Ushio innocently confessed her feelings to Shinpei.
A smartphone received from the police officer Totsumura. He claimed Ushio handed it over to him the day before she died. It's locked with a password, so its contents cannot be viewed.
Made from a seashell that Shinpei gifted her back in elementary school. It seems she cherished it greatly, as it has been carefully maintained. Ushio was apparently wearing it right up until the accident.
The abilities Ushio gained access to after recovering her memories are as follows:
Copying: The ability to scan and copy a target. • Physical Prowess: The incredible physical capabilities possessed by Shadows. • Hair Blades: The ability to weaponize her hair into sharp blades. • Memory Sharing: The ability to let others share and relive her own memories.
When Shinpei loops, all events that occurred in the previous cycle are undone. However, Ushio alone is an exception; by looping alongside Shinpei, she retains her memories from previous cycles. It has become clear that Ushio can carry over not just memories, but also data scanned in previous cycles. This could be used to bring along weapons obtained in previous loops.

Real name unknown. 21 years old. Blood type A. Works part-time at Snack Miyako. She loves music and has a bit of a geeky streak. She is currently obsessed with 2.5D idols. She receives passionate advances from Totsumura, but she doesn't seem entirely opposed to it. Her snaggletooth is her charm point.
The trump card Hizuru had been hiding. Taking advantage of the fact that Shide's mud (his armor material) contains zero information, the plan is to have Ryunosuke possess that mud. Ryunosuke will print his own data onto the stolen mud to acquire a new body, while Shide, stripped of it, will lose his defenses.
Hitogashima Island has a unique belief in castaway gods, stating that Hiruko-no-Mikoto resides within objects washed ashore and blesses them with bountiful catches. Umi-okuri (Sea Send-off) is a ritual held twice a year in summer and winter, where trash from the cleanup drive is carried on a shrine palanquin to the grounds, then burned to return it to the gods. It is said to bestow a blessing of good health upon the attendees.
A beautiful beach situated on the southern side of Hitogashima Island. It is beloved as a swimming spot. For those born and raised on the island, it is an extremely familiar location. Restaurant Kofune is built right beside the road that runs along Omoto Beach.
When Shinpei and Ushio were children, Ushio's prominent blonde hair and blue eyes made her a target for bullies. Worried about her, Shinpei promised, "I'll protect you," and gave her a seashell for her birthday. Ushio still cherishes that seashell to this day.
The mysterious flash of light at Ushio's funeral. That flash was emitted when the Shadow Shiori copied Shinpei. Unbeknownst to him, Shinpei had been infected with Shadow Sickness since the very first loop.
A mysterious audio file recorded on Hizuru Minakata's smartphone. It was recorded in the voice of a young woman with a Wakayama accent. Though there is a lot of static, the contents appear to be roughly as follows:
Something terrible is happening on Hitogashima Island. It involves Haine, and all the islanders will be killed at the Summer Festival on the 24th. The only person who can stop it is someone named "Shinpei Ajiro," but he can't do it alone. He needs help. Please come to Hitogashima Island and help "Shinpei."
July 22nd, 9:00 AM. While lost in thought on the beach, Shinpei witnesses Shadow Mio murder and copy Totsumura, and is subsequently stabbed himself. Furthermore, Kaori, who happened to be passing by, is captured by Mio. Unable to process what was happening, Shinpei's consciousness faded to black.
Population of 700. • Famous for mugwort mochi and salted squid guts. • Some people bought mochi right after arriving at the port. Thank you for showing me so many books. I was too embarrassed to say it, but I read every single one. Some of the sci-fi was tricky, but they were all so interesting! Shadows appear to possess the ability to spawn new Shadows. These born Shadows can apparently replicate not only the physical appearance but also the clothing and memories of the person they copy.
A Shadow's physical prowess is far superior to a human's. They can move at speeds too fast for the eye to track, and possess the superhuman strength to easily lift an adult male with one hand. However, Shadows also have a weakness. Their true body is the "flat shadow" cast upon the ground. The three-dimensional form standing above the shadow is merely a lump of meat in the shape of a person; no matter how much you attack it, you cannot strike a decisive blow. But by inflicting a fatal wound on the flat true body, a Shadow can be eliminated. They despise having their flat form touched, and if you try to step on their shadow, the shadow itself will move to dodge.
Even if a Shadow's three-dimensional body sustains damage, they can recover using incredible healing abilities. However, damage sustained by their flat true body cannot be healed. In such cases, the damage is projected onto their 3D form, seemingly accompanied by pain. Furthermore, these injuries appear impossible to treat with standard medical care such as disinfection or sutures.
Shadows can copy objects to duplicate them. Not only can they print (transform) their own bodies, but for small items, they can even print them onto a plucked strand of hair. However, if they print something that consumes energy like electricity or gas, it only copies the shape and won't actually function. To make it function, the original copy source must be erased. The benefits of a functional copied item are immense; even if it runs out of electricity or bullets, the copy's owner can simply reprint it to restore it to full capacity.
There are two types of copying. One is "transformation," where scanned information is projected onto one's own body, and the other is "parturition," where the body splits to birth a new Shadow.
The children birthed by Haine can give birth just once to multiply the Shadows, but the grandchildren birthed by those children lack the ability to give birth. Transformation, on the other hand, can be done endlessly by children and grandchildren alike. However, when copying a person, the original must be erased within a week, or the body will turn to mud and vanish.
Something akin to an endemic disease passed down on Hitogashima Island. It is said that if you contract Shadow Sickness, you will start seeing a shadow that looks exactly like you, and those who see their shadow will be killed by it. Many people used to fall ill with it in the past, but it has rarely been heard of since the postwar era. It is said that those who fell ill were purified by Hiruko-sama.
A video capturing the figure of Mio standing in front of Kofune at around 9:00 AM on July 22nd. The Mio in the video stands holding a kitchen knife, staring up at the second floor for about five minutes, before turning and walking off towards the mountains. Because the real Mio was taking a bath at this time, it is impossible for this to be the real her. It is precious footage proving the existence of Shadow Mio.
Shinpei's desperate feelings reached Ryunosuke's ears. Just as Haine reached out from her memories to leave a handprint on the present Shinpei, it might be possible for Shinpei to do something similar.
A type of petroleum product. Used in various applications as a liquid fuel. There are different types depending on its use and manufacturing method. It is highly volatile and burns violently even with an extremely small ignition source like static electricity, so mishandling it runs the risk of a major accident.
A delusion in which one misidentifies a friend, spouse, parent, or other close relative as having been replaced by an identical-looking impostor. It can sometimes be caused by dementia or a head injury. Records remain of a mass outbreak of this on Hitogashima Island in the past.
Karikiri has survived for over 300 years by switching bodies. In case he died or suffered severe injuries from an accident or illness, he preserved his own past bodies, but they were destroyed in the war. However, there's a high probability that the body of his predecessor, Iwao Karikiri, who died after the war, is still preserved somewhere, and using it as a spare would explain why there were two Shides. Though how exactly he operated it remains unclear.
The chief priest of the Hitogashima Shrine. The head of the Karikiri family, who manages the island's rituals. He is very talkative, and if left alone, he will keep chatting endlessly. He also has a gamer side to him, sometimes traveling to Tokyo purely for gaming events. He apparently attended a university in Tokyo during his student days.
During the Edo period, Shidehiko Hishigata copulated with the god Haine and made her give birth. Perhaps due to the nature of Shadows, the child born grew to look exactly like Shidehiko. Seeing this, Shidehiko schemed to use Haine's power to transplant his memories into his son and rejuvenate himself. He has continued to make her give birth to him, surviving for 300 years— that is the true nature of Masahito Karikiri and Shide.
Poke holes in a chicken breast with a fork, massage in salt and sugar, • sprinkle with sake, and microwave for 4-5 minutes. • Once cooked through, let it cool as is. • Shred the chicken and place it in a bowl. • Add mayonnaise and curry powder, mixing well. Taste and adjust. • Spread butter on sliced bread and top with frill lettuce. • Place the mixture from Step 2 on top to make a sandwich. • Cut in half and it's ready to serve.
Shinpei's right eye views the flow of time from a high-dimensional perspective, observing countless parallel worlds. The world that Shinpei observes is then established as objective reality. Even if someone achieves something in a parallel world, it is a magnificent power that renders everything outside the world Shinpei observed (the one he inhabits) as if it never happened. However, Shinpei himself has not completely mastered this power, and cannot activate it unless he uses "death" as a trigger. That is the reason he was looping every time he died. It seems even Haine cannot steal the right eye from Shinpei.
A keychain of the popular character "Egg Gentleman Eas-ta~kun". Since the first wave of merchandise was released in the early 2000s, the Egg Gentleman series has garnered support across a wide range of ages. Kaori has loved this character since she was a child, and Shinpei remembers her collecting Egg Gentleman goods for things like pencil boards and pencil cases.
The feeling that one has previously experienced a situation that is in fact entirely new. Sometimes associated with memories from a past life.
Just before 8:00 AM on July 22nd. The mud enveloping Shide absorbed nearby Shadows and morphed into the shape of a giant spider. With a wider field of vision and reach than his humanoid form, Shinpei is tormented by movements unimaginably swift for a creature of that size. The plan failed, and Shide's sharp arm impaled Shinpei.
A well-established monthly gaming magazine. Boasting a history of over 30 years, its price has remained fixed at 290 yen since its inaugural issue. Under the slogan "Making games 100 times more fun," they specialize in the latest game news, unflinchingly honest reviews, and reporting from a unique perspective. Totsumura is reading a back issue from June, which features the articles "10 Indie Games You Must Play Now" and "Infiltration: Gaming Salons in the Asia-Pacific Region!" The opening gravure spread features the rising idol Kaori Koyuba. Koba Mart stocks two copies every month, but because they sell out the moment they hit the shelves, the children of Hitogashima Island don't know this magazine exists.
There has always been a vast space running beneath Hitogashima Island. Combined with countless underground passageways and sewers dug by the military, it has morphed into an extremely complex maze. No one knows its full layout anymore. It is believed the Shadows utilized the sewers and such when moving around unseen.
The only supermarket on Hitogashima Island. Its predecessor was the Kobayakawa Store, which operated since before the war. Opens at 8:00 AM. The owner is Tatsuo Kobayakawa. His wife Asako, whom he married 10 years ago, is a licensed pharmacist, allowing them to sell everything from daily necessities to medicines. Koba Mart is inextricably linked to the daily lives of the islanders.
July 23rd, 8:00 AM. Even though it was opening time, Koba Mart's shutters remained closed. When the neighbor, Shiomi-san, grew suspicious and peeked into the main house, it was completely empty. With no signs of having left the island by ferry, the three members of the Kobayakawa family vanished into thin air overnight.
A third-grade elementary school student. The daughter of Tatsuo and Asako Kobayakawa, who run Hitogashima Island's only supermarket, "Koba Mart." She is a bit precocious and strong-willed. Her friends tease her because she is a poor swimmer. On July 21st, she began to drown in the sea, but her life was saved by Ushio's desperate rescue efforts. However, the shock of losing the Ushio who saved her left her unable to speak.
Shiori Kobayakawa was a Shadow. Something flashed at Ushio's funeral venue during the 1st and 2nd loops, but nothing flashed in the 3rd loop. The reason for the difference was because Shinpei told her about Shadows, putting her on guard. The flash in the 1st and 2nd loops is believed to be from a copy taking place, but it is unknown who at the funeral was targeted.
Born in 1959, 59 years old. Originally from France. When he was 32, he met and fell in love with Kotoko, then 20, who had come to study abroad from Japan. Three years later, he immigrated to Hitogashima Island, married Kotoko, and opened Restaurant Kofune. Kotoko never fully recovered after giving birth to their second daughter Mio and passed away, but he lives a happy life surrounded by his biological daughters Ushio and Mio, and his foster son Shinpei.
Born in 2000, 17 years old. Blood type A. A high school senior attending a prefectural high school on the mainland. Born to her French father Alain and Japanese mother Kotoko. She has blonde hair like her father. She is extremely strong-willed, but in elementary school, she was sometimes teased for her different appearance. She loves baking, and her specialties are cookies and chiffon cake. She absolutely hates supernatural phenomena. She was really looking forward to the Summer Festival, but lost her life in a marine accident on July 21st.
Born October 20, 2002. 15 years old. Blood type A. Ushio Kofune's biological younger sister. Unlike her sister, she takes after her mother with black hair. It is said her sun-tanned appearance looks exactly like her mother in her youth. A high school freshman attending the same prefectural high school as Ushio. Excellent athletic reflexes. She has won medals in swim meets. She loves eating, but is terrible at cooking. She considers her sister Ushio the most beautiful girl in the world, but believes herself to be her sister's complete opposite. "She acts just like Alain in how much she loves him and how she hates to lose," according to Shinpei.
Born November 2, 2000. 17 years old. Blood type A. A former classmate during their days at the Hitogashima Island Elementary and Middle School. She currently lives in Tokyo, but lived on Hitogashima Island until the 5th grade. She was shy and withdrawn, and often spent her time reading books in the library. She loves a character named "Egg Gentleman Eas-ta~kun."
One of the top idols of the present day. Boasting high vocal and acting abilities, she is widely loved across generations for her polite and approachable personality, and the occasional glimpses of an airhead. At the 2017 Red and White Song Battle, the group she belongs to performed as the closing act. She loves her hometown of Hitogashima Island, and never misses out on her hometown tax donations each year.
The official channel opened by Kaori Koyuba on a video streaming site. Aside from the latest info on new songs and live concerts, it is also utilized for interacting with her fans. Perhaps owing to Kaori's personality and her attitude towards cherishing her fans, her live streams see virtually no troll comments.
The reason Mio fell into the sea was because her bicycle's brakes were broken. There were marks resembling a cut made into the wire; if it was a prank, it was a highly dangerous and malicious one.
July 24th, just past 8:30 PM. The Hitogashima Shrine live concert venue, bustling with excitement from Kaori's appearance, turned into a hellscape. A four-armed monster that suddenly appeared lead an army of Shadows to slaughter the audience one after another. Shinpei desperately fought back, but was helpless and killed. Is there truly no way to stop that tragedy?
The woman living next door to Koba Mart. She has known Asako Kobayakawa, the owner's wife, for a long time since they were children. She is talkative and can speak intimately with anyone. Her neighborhood gossip network surpasses the internet, making her the most well-informed person regarding the island's human relations.
A report on the results of the tourism business on Hitogashima Island. It details trends in tourist numbers and tourist spending. It highlights that tourist numbers are slightly decreasing year over year, that the ratio of individual tourists exceeds that of tour groups, and that awareness among younger demographics is low. Proposed improvements include "improving awareness," "improving transportation convenience," "increasing lodging facilities," "attracting settings for movies/anime," and "applying for subsidies."
Haine's guardian. A massive four-armed monster. Nothing else is known about him yet besides the name Shide.
With just a touch from Shadow Totsumura, Totsumura's corpse vanished without a trace, leaving nothing but a stain on the ground where it had been.
A type of bomb designed to start fires. Filled with oil, they burn the entire surrounding area upon impact. They were used during the war to burn down the wooden houses that were common in Japan at the time.
Mercuric chloride. A deadly poison. Its handling is strictly restricted by the Poisonous and Deleterious Substances Control Law, but it used to be employed for disinfection and sterilization. Direct contact alone can cause dermatitis or nervous system abnormalities, and it is so highly toxic that drinking even a single drop leads to death.
A pond located in the sacred forest of Hitogashima Shrine. The surrounding area forms a wetland, and it has been designated as a prefectural natural monument. Legend has it that En no Gyoja sealed a giant serpent here. Long ago, a massive serpent ran rampant, tormenting the people of Awaji Island and the mainland. Upon hearing this, En no Ozunu cornered the serpent using a sword granted by the gods. When the serpent begged for its life, promising never to do evil again, En no Ozunu forgave it and sealed it within this land.
His father is Toru, and his mother is Akemi. Both are underwater archaeologists. An underwater archaeologist is an expert equipped with the skills to survey underwater, and their targets range widely from sunken ships to submerged ruins. Neither was a native of Hitogashima Island, but they loved the island, overflowing with rich nature and history, and lived happy days there. However, 10 years ago in 2008, their boat sank during an accident at work, and they never returned.
A secret medical record was hidden in the Hishigata Clinic. The diagnoses were all listed as Capgras syndrome, but it was actually a registry of those who became food for Haine. The names of Toru and Akemi Ajiro, who supposedly died in a boating accident, were also there. After discovering the Hiruko Cave during a survey in the waters near Hitogashima Island, the two tried to announce it, but were killed by Shide to keep them quiet.
July 24th. Shadow Shinpei, who appeared on the night of the festival, read Shinpei's memories and realized his looping ability. The Shadows seemingly have a grand objective, and Shadow Mio attempts to kill Shinpei, seeing him as an obstacle, but is stopped by Shadow Shinpei. Shadow Shinpei said: "If we let Shinpei die, we might just return to the 22nd again. Therefore, he must not be killed until everything is finished."
Mio mustered her courage and confessed her feelings, but Shinpei says the one he loves is Ushio. Even though she already knew, hearing it said clearly was a huge shock. But still, Mio is Shinpei's precious little sister. Even if they can't be as close as lovers, they won't drift any further apart than they are now. Mio feels it was better to have bravely spoken up than to live carrying around those clouded feelings.
A snack bar located in the central town close to the Hitogashima Island port. It operates as a cafe during the day and is well-known even among the children on the island. The cafe hours are 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM, and the night sessions are from 7:00 PM to midnight. Because Totsumura, the island's resident officer, is a regular, frequent patrons sometimes call it the "Miyako Police Box." Totsumura himself is secretly nicknamed "T-800" by some of the staff, derived from the fact that the bottle-keep liquor he always orders costs 800 yen.
Totsumura's father was an excellent police officer. Protecting the weak and never yielding to evil, his father's figure looked like a superhero in the eyes of a young Totsumura. Totsumura joined the force wanting to become a police officer and fight for justice, but peaceful duty on Hitogashima Island differed greatly from his imagined days. Compounded by his innate laziness, he kept failing his promotion exams, leading to his current situation. Even so, the flame of justice burning in the depths of his heart has never been extinguished.
A time capsule buried by everyone at school about 7 years ago, when Kaori moved away. Not just Shinpei and Kaori, but students from other grades also participated. Various things were stuffed inside, including toys, notebooks, and letters.
The mountainous area in the western part of the island. Wartime historical sites remain here, such as the ruins of the first and third gun batteries, and the searchlight post. It boasts the highest elevation on the island. On the west coast lies the Hitogashima Island Lighthouse and the ruins of the second gun battery.
July 22nd, just before 8:00 AM. Having shared his memories with his comrades through pseudo-looping, Shinpei and the others gathered at the school to intercept Haine and her forces. Ushio tries to stop Shinpei as he goes to greet Tokiko, who arrived late. However, she didn't make it in the nick of time, and Shinpei was shot to death by Tokiko. Tokiko was a Shadow. Unable to process it, Shinpei's consciousness faded.
July 22nd, 8:00 AM. Haine will betray the Hishigata family— Even conveying this truth, Tokiko turns a deaf ear. In the fierce battle, Sou takes a fatal wound while protecting Mio. Though shaken by having put Mio and Sou in danger, Tokiko deals the finishing blow to Shinpei with a ghastly expression. Was it out of desperation, or was it to redo everything? Perhaps her anger was directed at herself.
This refers to "Tamam Shud," the cipher that appears in Ryunosuke Nagumo's work "Drift." It originates from a code held by an unidentified corpse discovered in Australia in the 1940s. It contains a string of incomprehensible alphabet letters, and what it represents remains unsolved to this day. In the story of "Drift," it appears in a way that allows for meta-level deduction.
Haine's homeland, far beyond the distant sea. A mysterious world that living creatures of this realm cannot reach. The flow of time is stagnant there, making it an eternal, unchanging world.
An entity that looks exactly like oneself. They have been spoken of since ancient times in legends and myths worldwide, and superstitions claiming that one who sees their doppelgänger will die are also well-known.
A police officer working at the island's only police box, and a self-proclaimed "Champion of Justice." 34 years old. A relative of the Kofune family. A small island located to the northeast of Hitogashima Island. Its western side features tombolo topography, allowing one to walk across from Hitogashima Island only during low tide. Though not large, it boasts war ruins, remains of a stone quarry, and a cave along the coast previously used as an ascetic training ground.

A traditional local dish passed down from ancient times. It is said to be the roots of modern sushi, but it generates its sourness through fermentation rather than using vinegar. In Wakayama, mackerel and saury are famous. It is said to boast a history of 1,000 years.
Ryunosuke has the ability to see the future. When Ryunosuke's data, which burst out of Haine 14 years ago, was printed onto Hizuru's body, an irregular accident caused the coordinates on the time axis to misalign. Ryunosuke was operating Hizuru from a future 2 seconds ahead. By inheriting Ryunosuke's data, Shinpei has also become capable of this 2-second future precognition.

[Wakayama Dispatch] Numerous reports have poured in regarding indiscriminate terrorism at a live concert venue in Wakayama City/Hitogashima Island. The Hitogashima Summer Festival is underway at the Hitogashima Shrine, where the incident occurred, but with no contact with the site, the extent of the damage among attendees remains unknown.

This replica, born from a lightning strike, is also called a "Swampman."
A nurse working at the Hishigata Clinic. 38 years old. Lives with her husband. She is skilled at drawing blood, and the islanders praise her for being completely painless. She practiced classical ballet from kindergarten through middle school, and prides herself on her flexibility. Her husband Daisuke is a systems engineer, originally from Hitogashima Island.
Ginjiro Nezu's wife. Two months ago, she went to do farm work, and when she returned, she was a Shadow. She is pinned to the wall with a nail gun he fired on reflex. Unable to deal the finishing blow to a Shadow that has the appearance and memories of his beloved wife, Nezu agonized in conflict.
A stubborn, artisan-minded, one-eyed hunter. He knows the topography, flora, and fauna of Hitogashima Island inside and out. He seems to know about the Shadows as well. He is also a master marksman.
A one-eyed hunter and master marksman. He knew many truths about the Shadows, beyond just rumors and legends. He was the collaborator Hizuru Minakata had mentioned as the true identity of the novelist Ryunosuke Nagumo; a trustworthy figure.
Not all Shadows act with a specific purpose in mind. There appear to be stray Shadows wandering aimlessly without a goal. Compared to normal Shadows, their copying accuracy seems lacking, but is there a reason for this?
The young girl in the red kimono floating above the island on the night of the festival. The four-armed Shadow referred to her as "Mother," but Ryunosuke Nagumo called her Haine.
The true identity of Hitogashima Island's god, Hiruko-no-Mikoto, and the mother of the Shadows. She resides in a cave deep underground. In contrast to her dignified demeanor, her face is wrapped in bandages and she receives blood transfusions. She recognizes Ushio as a traitor.
Haine and Hizuru were once friends. However, losing her ego to hunger, Haine ended up eating Ryunosuke. Agonizing with guilt, Haine's persona burst out along with the stolen right eye, and she vanished without a trace. Her right eye has still not been found even 14 years later.
Hiruko's fate was a bizarre one. From that day she washed up on Omoto Beach in the form of a whale, the gears of destiny must have gone awry for both Haine and Shide. Haine was able to know human love and friendship, but was simultaneously swallowed by human greed, forced to spend a long time suffering. Coexistence between humans and Shadows was far too difficult. What she desired in the end, having survived for 300 years, was to prevent that encounter and erase it all. Beautiful memories, love, all of it…
The incident 14 years ago caused Haine's ego to split into Hizuru's best friend "Hoine" and "Hiruko." Hoine's persona took the right eye, separated from Haine, and escaped into the sea. Afterward, she drifted in the sea for 14 years while copying fish and jellyfish, but was drawn back to Hitogashima Island by a signal Haine sent out in preparation for the Summer Festival. Then, on the day of the cleanup drive, she accidentally copied Ushio, who happened to be nearby, and has resided within Ushio ever since.
Real name Hoine Karikiri. A fisherman's daughter who lived on Hitogashima Island 300 years ago. She was copied and eaten by a whale (Hiruko) that washed ashore on the beach. Afterward, Hiruko came to be worshiped as a god, and was joined with Shidehiko Hishigata. From then on, Shidehiko assumed the Karikiri surname.
Haine possessed the ability to loop freely. However, because the world chosen by the observer Shinpei is deemed official history, she struggled to pinpoint the exact world Shinpei chose from among countless parallel worlds. But things are different now. The handprint left on Shinpei's arm serves as an indelible mark, and relying on it, she can immediately find the world Shinpei travels to.
Based on her experience of nearly having her mind tampered with by Haine in the Hiruko Cave, Ushio figured that if she traced Haine's invasion route backward, she might be able to erase Haine. Using that sensation as a hint, she learned to sever the connection between a Shadow and Haine by tampering with the inside of the Shadow's head. By using this, she can free a Shadow from Haine's control.
The son of the souvenir shop "Hamaji Store." A fifth-grade elementary school student. A mischievous and rough personality. He hates shiitake mushrooms. He frequently plays with his sister Akari (5), his schoolmate Shiori Kobayakawa, and Teru Todai. For what it's worth, Teru's parents run the cafe "Todai."
The mascot character for the personal blog "Pantaro Yurahama's Ruins Explorations." The admin visited ruins in various regions and posted photos and reports, always carrying around a stuffed animal they named Panta-sensei. In 2008, an article about the old ward of the Hishigata Clinic was published. It seems they would revisit ruins they took a liking to, but updates suddenly ceased at a certain point. The blog remains abandoned even years later.
The sole medical institution on Hitogashima Island. Located at the foot of the central mountains. Its history is extremely long, tracing its roots all the way back to the Edo period. Remote islands often face issues with a shortage of doctors and equipment, but Hishigata Clinic performs everything from internal medicine to surgery, supporting the lives of the residents. The clinic director, Seidou Hishigata, commands deep trust from the islanders.
The ward used by Hishigata Clinic until around 1960. It is no longer in use today, but half a century has passed without it being demolished. It sits on land owned by the Hishigata family on Mt. Takanosu. The decaying ruins have made a name for themselves outside the prefecture as a haunted spot.
An old album belonging to the Hishigata family. It is so old that even Sou cannot find any familiar faces in it. Since all the photos inside are in black and white, it is believed to be from over half a century ago.
The founder and first director of the Hishigata Clinic. The Hishigata family has overseen Hitogashima Island's rituals since ancient times, but in the mid-Edo period, Shidehiko's father began medical practices, forming the origins of the Hishigata Clinic. Later, a branch of the Hishigata family split off to become the present-day Karikiri family.
The director of the Hishigata Clinic, and Sou and Tokiko's father. He single-handedly shoulders the medical care of Hitogashima Island, and was present for the police autopsy when Ushio died in a marine accident. He holds a very high level of trust from the islanders.
The director of the Hishigata Clinic, and the biological father of Sou and Tokiko. The Hishigata Clinic collaborated with Haine, and his wife Chitose was a Shadow. Haine's goal is to return to her homeland. In that country, which only Shadows can reach, time does not flow. Seidou was cooperating in order to take his ailing wife and children there so they could live eternally.
Born November 20, 2000. 17 years old, Blood type O. The son of "Hishigata Clinic," the only hospital on Hitogashima Island. He attends the same prefectural high school as Ushio and the others, studying hard to get into medical school. He is Shinpei's childhood friend and best friend. They grew close after Sou forcefully struck up conversations with Shinpei, who was a transfer student. He is self-conscious around Mio. He likes her because she is (or at least seemed) demure and kind. He doesn't get along well with his father.
Sou and Tokiko Hishigata's mother. Married to Seidou, the director of Hishigata Clinic. She suffers from a heart condition and lives using a wheelchair. A donor was found five years ago, but she did not fully recover, and continues to battle the illness today. She possesses an extremely kind, family-oriented personality. Sou, Tokiko, and Seidou all cherish Chitose dearly.
Sou and Tokiko's mother. Chitose spent a long time battling illness. Sou believed her recovery progressed because a donor was found. But in reality, she was able to exist because Seidou asked Haine to turn her into a Shadow.
Born June 25, 2002. 16 years old, Blood type O. Sou's younger sister. Childhood friend and best friend to Mio Kofune. Currently a high school freshman attending a prefectural high school on the mainland. Highly intelligent with top grades, but physically weak and poor at sports. She holds a particular disdain for marathons. She knows how to put on a kimono by herself.
Sou Hishigata's younger sister, and Mio Kofune's best friend. According to Ushio, Tokiko was conversing with the four-armed Shadow during the tragedy on the 24th. Judging from the conversation, the four-armed Shadow seemed to break a promise with Tokiko, though the truth of the matter remains uncertain.
The person they met in the Hiruko Cave was Sou's younger sister, Tokiko. The real Tokiko, not a Shadow. The giant stray Shadow she subjugated captured Ushio. It seems she is trying to hand Ushio over to Hiruko-sama, but why is she siding with the Shadows?
Despite being in a state where she couldn't communicate smoothly, Hizuru deduced Shinpei and the others' positions and circumstances. It seems her outstanding deductive reasoning had already been cultivated since her middle school days.
July 23rd, just before 11:00 AM. Due to Shadow Shinpei's machinations, Hizuru and the others were split into two groups. After saving Mio and Sou, Shinpei rushed to Torashima (Tiger Island) to help Hizuru. But it was already too late; Hizuru was on the verge of drawing her last breath. If only he had arrived faster, he would have made it in time. Believing this, Shinpei places his bets on the next loop.
An inhabited island floating in the Kitan Strait. It belongs to Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture. It spans an area of 5.3 square kilometers and has a population of about 700. Its primary industries are tourism and fishing. Local specialties include mugwort mochi and salted squid guts. The Hiruko legend and ruins of a gun battery constructed in the Meiji era are known as tourism resources. Many residents utilize the ferries operated by the Hitogashima Steamship Company to commute to school or work on the mainland.
Located on the northern side of Hitogashima Island, it is the only port where the ferry connecting the island to the mainland departs and arrives. It is used not only for the ingress and egress of tourists, but also for transporting groceries and commuting to work and school. As mountains occupy the majority of Hitogashima Island, flat land is limited to the areas surrounding the Hitogashima Island Port and Omoto Beach in the south, leading to private homes and facilities lining up in concentric circles expanding from the port.
The island's only school, attended by the elementary and middle schoolers of Hitogashima Island. The facilities surround the schoolyard with the main gate to the east, the school building to the north, the gymnasium to the west, and the pool situated to the south. The path alongside the pool leads to the islanders' private beach. Due to the size of the grounds and the sturdiness of the buildings, it is designated as the island's evacuation shelter.
A lighthouse standing on the southwest side of Hitogashima Island. It was established in the early Meiji era based on the Osaka Treaty, signed to ensure the safe navigation of foreign ships. It stands 12 meters tall, and its light can reach up to 38 kilometers away. Owing to its high historical value, it remains a popular tourist spot today.
Enshrined on a hill overlooking the Hitogashima Island Port at 1-chome Hitomachi, Wakayama City. The sacred forest continues into the pristine woods in the eastern part of Hitogashima Island. Erected in 1732 (Kyoho 17). At the time, it was written as "Hito Shrine." Generations of the Karikiri family have served as the chief priests. It is famous for the "Umi-okuri" ritual held every year in summer and winter.
One of the largest events on Hitogashima Island, held in the summer at the Hitogashima Shrine. In 2018, it is held on July 24th. The main events are the portable shrine at 5:00 PM, fireworks at 8:00 PM, and the Umi-okuri at 8:30 PM. The portable shrine exits the grounds, heads down the approach, crosses the hill, and makes for Omoto Beach. Trash collected at Omoto Beach is loaded onto the portable shrine, brought back to the main shrine, and burned. This unique custom is famous even off the island, known to draw hundreds of tourists every year.
A teacher at the Hitogashima Elementary & Middle School. Nicknamed "Bucchi." 58 years old. Because she has taught at the small school for so many years, nearly all islanders under a certain age have been taught by her. The ever-gentle and straightforward Hitobuchi-sensei is adored by her students. She has a family of four; her husband Nobuo is a postal worker, and her sons Kenichi and Yuji both work at the town hall. Everyone has a cheerful personality, and the Hitobuchi household is never without a smile.
The nickname for the Hitogashima Shrine situated in the northern part of the island. It derives from Hiruko-sama, the god of bountiful fishing enshrined at Hitogashima Shrine. Various legends surrounding Hiruko-sama are passed down on Hitogashima Island. Before the war, when Shadow Sickness was prevalent, it is said that those who fell ill were purified by Hiruko-sama.
A wooden carved statue placed in the operating room of the Hishigata Clinic Old Ward. It holds a fish under its left arm. According to the Kojiki, Hiruko is recognized as the first god born between Izanagi and Izanami during the creation of the land, but was deemed "an imperfect child" and cast away into the sea immediately after birth. Since the name is sometimes written as "Water Leech Child," some theories interpret this to mean its limbs were deformed like a leech.
In 1732 (Kyoho 17), Onogoro Island was on the brink of collapse due to starvation from the Great Kyoho Famine. One day, a massive whale washed up on its beach. Because Onogoro Island possessed a belief in castaway gods, treating washed-up items as gods themselves or gifts from the gods, the islanders who gathered on the beach rejoiced, deeming this whale a divine blessing. When a fisherman's daughter approached, the whale's body shone blindingly bright, and in the blink of an eye, it transformed into an exact replica of the daughter. And then, it devoured her.
Terrified of a curse, the islanders enshrined the being wearing the daughter's form as the living god, Hiruko-sama. They then built a chamber within the underground caves of the island, and had Hiruko-sama reside there. This is how the Hiruko Cave came to be. The first thing Hiruko-sama ate after obtaining human form was human flesh, and continued demanding humans as sacrifices thereafter, but supposedly brought bountiful catches in return. During this period, Onogoro Island changed its name to Hitogashima (People Island), which eventually morphed into the current Hitogashima spelling.
A vast subterranean space spreads out beneath Hitogashima Island. Hitogashima Island's guardian deity, Hiruko-sama, is said to have settled there after washing ashore on the island, earning it the name Hiruko Cave. It is said there used to be an entrance in the western part of the island that appeared only at low tide, but it was allegedly sealed off when the military developed the port during the Sino-Japanese War.
The final regular ferry for Hitogashima Steamship is the 18:30 departure from Hitogashima Island, but extra ferries run on the day of the Summer Festival when many tourists visit.

Shinpei Ajiro's habit. Having another version of himself observe him from a high vantage point, to view things with a broad perspective. By taking a bird's-eye view to oversee his own position and the surrounding situation, Shinpei maintains cool-headed thinking at all times, notices things that are hard to catch, and has lived his life without getting depressed even when making mistakes.
The operation to eliminate the Shadows that replaced the Kobayakawa family. Initially, Plan A envisioned Hizuru storming in and eradicating them left and right, but it was changed to Plan B because the daughter, Shiori, slipped away. The new plan positions Shinpei and Nezu on standby along Shiori's escape route, where they will intercept her as she flees.
A detective attached to the Wakayama North Police Station's Community Safety Division. Rank: Sergeant. He arrived on the island to investigate the Kobayakawa family's disappearance. He is racking his brain over the many suspicious elements, such as the entire family vanishing and no trace of them leaving the island.
July 22nd, before noon. As Mio rode her bicycle down the hill to welcome Shinpei, she carried too much momentum and plummeted into the sea. There was a slight accident where Shinpei caught a glimpse of her striped underwear, but fortunately, she was uninjured.
Mio mustered her courage and confessed her feelings. But Shinpei did not reciprocate. To him, Mio is a precious younger sister, and he could not view her as a romantic interest. Even though she knew this, Mio's chest tightened with a painful ache. But it is also true she feels much lighter than when she kept her feelings bottled up inside; perhaps this was a rite of passage for her to move forward.
The true identity of the masked author "Ryunosuke Nagumo"; her real name is Hizuru Minakata. A Hitogashima Island native of unknown age. A tall beauty who wears glasses and boasts a G-cup chest. She seems to be using a gun to fight the Shadows, but her reasons and goals are unknown.

But one day, driven to madness by hunger, Haine devoured and killed Hizuru's younger brother, Ryunosuke. Agonizing with guilt over killing her best friend's brother, Haine's persona burst out along with Ryunosuke's data. Ryunosuke's data entered Hizuru, and ever since, the Shadow Ryunosuke has resided within her.
Hizuru Minakata's twin brother. 14 years ago in summer, he was found dead under mysterious circumstances on Mt. Takanosu. The police ruled it the work of wild dogs and initiated a mountain hunt, but Hizuru, the first discoverer, declared it a murder. This was because, hidden among the bite wounds, there were marks of strangulation left on his neck. He wasn't eaten to death; he was killed and then eaten—despite Hizuru's assertions, the autopsy concluded he died of hemorrhagic shock from bite wounds, and the case was closed. When storming Koba Mart, Nezu called Hizuru by the name Ryunosuke. She also used her brother's name when they met at the festival, but the reason is unknown.
Hizuru Minakata's twin brother. A middle-schooler born on July 7, 1989. He lives together with his father Tora and mother Tsukiko as a family of four. Unlike the cool-headed Hizuru, he possesses a sociable and friendly personality. He is also close friends with Shiori Kobayakawa's mother, Asako (maiden name Isogane).
It seemed Ryunosuke's life was lost in the tragedy 14 years ago. However, because Ryunosuke's data, which Haine scanned, entered Hizuru, Ryunosuke's mind continues to live on within Hizuru. When Hizuru ties her hair up, their personalities can swap, and while Ryunosuke controls the body, he can move beyond human limits utilizing the power of a Shadow. On Hizuru's palm, a burn-like mark remains from where Ryunosuke was printed.
The armor covering Shide's body. Devised by the 2nd generation Nayuta Karikiri in preparation for war, it has been continually improved and used ever since. The material of the armor is the same "mud" that comprises the three-dimensional bodies of Shadows. It is the end result of a Shadow that has lost its flat true form through deterioration. Although the mud retains absolutely no data, Shide operates it by transmitting his own consciousness into it. It can be reshaped or extended into various forms, but it does not possess the abilities to flatten or copy. The inside of the mud acts as a subspace, so external damage never pierces through. It is extremely powerful, but apparently hides another secret.
Around 3000 BC, the world's oldest urban civilization was born in the basin of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Massive floods frequently occurred in Mesopotamia, and one theory claims it was the model for Noah's Ark in the Old Testament.
At Sou Hishigata's suggestion, it was decided they would establish a password to distinguish between Shadows and real humans. At this time, they played a word association game starting from the standard "Mountain/River," and ultimately decided on "Mesopotamian Civilization" as the password.
The color of Shinpei Ajiro's right eye had changed from before. Shinpei himself has no idea when or why it changed.
Even if you contract Shadow Sickness, if you manage to kill the Shadow that is born, you will never contract it again. In other words, if you defeat your own Shadow, you will never be copied again. This state is likened to measles and called "immunity." Gaining immunity and becoming immune to being copied carries two benefits.
Because they can no longer replace you, • the risk of your life being targeted by Shadows decreases. • The risk of having your memories stolen by a copy becomes zero.
Shide's armor is equipped with a special ability called "Yamabiko," which can redirect any energy it receives straight back at the opponent.
Established in 1994. The only Western-style restaurant on Hitogashima Island. While every islander has surely visited at least once, it also enjoys a very good reputation among tourists. It is especially bustling during lunchtime; the A-Lunch Pork Cutlet, B-Lunch Fried White Fish, and C-Lunch Neapolitan boast unforgettable flavors once you've tasted them.
Marks left on the victim's neck. They indicate that the victim resisted, making the possibility of suicide extremely low.
When Shinpei dies, time rewinds and he can try again. However, with each successive loop, the amount of time he can rewind gradually grows shorter, and any events that occurred prior to the time he rewound to become "locked-in" events that can never be overturned. It seems loops are not omnipotent.
July 24th, the massacre by the Shadows has begun at the festival. Could he use the looping phenomenon to prevent this? If he was guaranteed to return to the past, Shinpei would undoubtedly choose to die. However, he can't say for sure there aren't activation conditions for a loop. Taking his own life might not trigger a loop, and there's no guarantee his loop destination will be in the past. It's entirely possible he might fly into the future. All Shinpei can do right now is survive and protect Mio. To fulfill his promise to Ushio, as well.
The stray Shadows Haine assigned to guard Tokiko. Their official names are Rosencrantz and Guildenstern. Tokiko named them after characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Ros has an absentminded personality, while Guil, whose right hand is injured, is short-tempered. Shadows entirely specialized for combat like them are called Hitodenashi (Inhuman); by sacrificing their human forms, their combat prowess improves in exchange for lower intelligence.
July 23rd, 3:00 PM. Shinpei and Mio catch sight of Shiori at the Hitogashima Shrine. The two chase Shiori into the sacred forest, reuniting with the woman from the ferry near the ruins of the 4th gun battery. However, as the wounded woman attempts to convey something to Shinpei, she is gunned down by an unseen assailant. Turning around, Shinpei's eyes are met with the sight of Mio pressing a handgun against Mio. Then, the Mio dressed in her school uniform shoots the other Mio to death, before turning her gun on Shinpei.
July 22nd, 9:00 AM. Shinpei is lost in thought on the embankment in front of his house. Did someone tamper with the bicycle brakes to kill Mio? Just then, Totsumura appears on patrol and speaks to Mio. Mio was supposed to be in the bath; why is she standing in front of her house wearing her uniform? Before he can think, Mio stabs Totsumura to death and spawns an exact copy of him. The newly born copy of Totsumura erases the real Totsumura and takes his place. Realizing she was caught watching this entire sequence unfold, Shinpei is murdered by Mio once again.
July 24th, 9:00 PM. The Summer Festival finally reaches its climax. Screams echo across the shrine grounds after the Umi-okuri ritual concludes. Numerous Shadows have appeared and initiated a mass slaughter. Shinpei is saved by a bespectacled woman identifying herself as Ryunosuke Nagumo. Nagumo repels the Shadows with a shotgun, but is countered by a massive Shadow bearing four arms. It is then revealed that the Shadows have a ringleader they refer to as "Mother." In order to put a stop to the tragedy, Shinpei begs Nagumo to shoot him dead.
July 23rd, just past 9:00 AM. Joining forces with Shadow Ushio, Shinpei and his group make their way from the Hishigata Clinic Old Ward to the Hiruko Cave. There, they meet a young girl named Haine, the ringleader of the Shadows. Borrowing Shiori's form, Haine was making preparations for the mass slaughter. Shinpei and the others close in on the truth, but once again, the four-armed Shadow blocks their path. The Shadows attempt to prevent Shinpei's suicide to stop his looping ability from triggering, but Shinpei narrowly succeeds in looping by consuming the poison he brought from the Old Ward.
July 22nd, before 7:00 AM. By utilizing the memory-sharing ability, Shinpei and his allies succeed in earning the trust of Hizuru and Nezu. They devise a plan to obliterate Haine and set out for Koba Mart, but Hizuru and Nezu are killed by the four-armed Shadow, who had anticipated their arrival. As long as the brand stamped on Shinpei's arm remains, even if he loops, Haine can follow him to the same timeline with her memories intact. In this desperate situation, Shinpei narrowly escapes danger when Ushio cuts his throat to trigger a loop.
July 22nd, 8:00 AM. All-out warfare is the only way to counter Haine and Shide. Shinpei decides to share Ushio's memories with his comrades, uniting their strength to intercept Haine. However, Shinpei's consciousness is suddenly cut short, and he is thrust back into the past once again.
July 23rd, before 2:00 AM. Shide's true identity was Masahito Karikiri. Storming the Hitogashima Shrine, Shinpei demands to know why he killed his parents. He succeeds in defeating Karikiri, who does nothing but smile fearlessly, but Ushio is suddenly killed by another Karikiri appearing from behind.
July 23rd, 11:00 AM. Through the machinations of Haine disguised as Shadow Shinpei, the group is split into two. Mio's group heads for the southwest fields, while Hizuru's group heads for Torashima (Tiger Island) in the northeast. After grouping up with Shadow Mio, Shinpei hurries toward the fields Mio headed for. However, Mio and the others have already been sent to the Hiruko Cave to serve as food for Mother. According to Tokiko, who managed to escape, it's an uphill battle over on Torashima as well. Shinpei resolves to loop. Swearing to execute the fastest possible rescue of both groups, he takes his own life.
July 24th, before 6:00 AM. The Ushio he had been traveling with all this time was the Ushio from the 3rd loop. By having the 9th loop's Ushio read the memories she left behind, Shinpei and his allies magnificently resurrected Ushio. In order to outwit Haine and the others, Shinpei opted to loop from an advantageous position—what could his true intentions be?
Shinpei reunites with a young girl at the Hitogashima Island port. It's Kaori Koyuba, his classmate from elementary school. She says she was invited to perform in a live concert event at the Hitogashima Summer Festival. Shinpei is surprised that this girl, who gave off such a quiet and shy impression, has become a popular idol. Largely due to her appearance, this year's Summer Festival records unprecedented attendance, but behind the scenes, a terrifying plan is being devised.
Feeling a sense of crisis regarding the existence of the Shadows, Shinpei and Mio rely on Totsumura to enlist the help of the police. Their feelings get through to a half-doubting Totsumura, who begins to burn with his mission as a Hero of Justice. However, with a detective from the mainland going missing immediately after arriving on the island, the demonic hands of the Shadows are steadily drawing closer. Is there truly a way to defeat the Shadows?
On the night of the Hitogashima Summer Festival, the shrine grounds are thrown into a panic by the sudden appearance of the Shadows. Shinpei grabs Mio's hand and flees. To keep his promise to Ushio, he cannot leave Mio all alone. He will protect her, even at the cost of his own life. Having resolved this, Shinpei regroups with Alain and considers escaping from the island, but is completely unaware that they have walked right into the enemy's trap.
Transported into the memories of Hizuru's middle school days, Shinpei and Ushio learn that Hizuru and Haine used to be close friends. Perhaps they can change history. Thinking this, Shinpei and Ushio succeed in interfering with past events. However, things don't go entirely as planned, and a tribulation different from the original history awaits them.
Tokiko finds herself agonizing between her beloved family and Haine on one side, and her best friends like Mio on the other. She just wants to live a peaceful, happy life, but caught in relationships that cannot coexist, unable to consult anyone, only her sins and suffering continue to swell. At last, the time comes for her to make a decision. Was her choice the right one? Nobody knows.
Shinpei returns to Hitogashima Island to attend Ushio's funeral. He and Ushio had an argument over his move to Tokyo, and hadn't made up since. Shinpei fiercely regrets that he postponed it when he had countless opportunities to make amends. Strange things begin happening around him. Eerie Shadows strolling the island, and the inexplicable phenomenon of returning to the past every time he is killed. And then, Shinpei reunites with the supposedly dead Ushio.
Kaori is scheduled to share her memories of Hitogashima Island at a talk show. She hunts for material alongside Shinpei and the others, but they can't quite land on a highly impactful episode. Amidst this, Ushio remembers the time capsule. The one everyone buried when Kaori was transferring schools. It's a perfect anecdote about her hometown, and a golden opportunity to awaken her memories from that time. Relying on limited clues, the group begins their search for the time capsule. But Kaori seems dispirited. Inside there lies a secret she doesn't want anyone to see.
Shinpei and Ushio reunite for the first time in two years. Even though they aren't officially dating, seeing them mutually yearn for each other leaves a cloud in Mio's heart. Shinpei treats her gently without noticing her feelings. What does she want to do? What should she do? To get rid of this cloud and take even a small step forward, Mio resolves to confess her feelings.
Stuck on ideas for her new novel, Hizuru returns to Hitogashima Island seeking a way out of her slump. She intended to quietly brainstorm on her own, but ends up having to look after her niece, Hoine. Though initially bewildered, acting alongside Hoine makes Hizuru realize she is viewing the island from a different perspective than usual. Gathering the fragments of sparkling ideas left in their footprints, Hizuru weaves a new tale.
Shinpei and Ushio reunite for the first time in two years. Things had been awkward between them since Shinpei moved to Tokyo, but driven by terribly overwhelming affection and the fear of never seeing each other again, they instinctively embrace. Even though they continue to drift past each other afterward, they remain connected in their hearts, reaffirming that they are absolutely indispensable to one another.
